problems with close/maximize/minimize/resizing and drop-down menus

Hi,

Okay, so a week or so ago my computer started having this issue where the close/minimize/maximize buttons stopped working. The contents of the window itself are functional (like, if I am using Firefox I can still open and close tabs, work on the internet, etc.) but trying to close, minimize, maximize, re-size or drag a window doesn't work. It's almost like the window gets frozen and the only way to minimize/maximize/close said window is to open Windows Taskmaster or press the Windows key to open the Start menu. Lately, even the latter is not working - the Taskbar and Start menu become frozen and I am forced to go in through Taskmaster. The problem is not just with Firefox but with any window I have open - Windows Explorer, Microsoft Word, Outlook Express, etc.

Another issue I'm having which I think is related is that I cannot use drop-down boxes properly. I can navigate them using my arrow keys and pressing Enter, but trying to use the mouse causes the menu to disappear.

I thought it was an external mouse issue at first, but even just using the pointing device this problem persists for both the drop-down menu issue and the close/min/max issue. I am not getting any error messages. Virus scans and such tell me there is absolutely nothing wrong with my computer, as does the Windows FixIt. I have already run System Restore and it has also done nothing to alleviate the problem.

I'm really not a technical person so I'm not sure what information you need about my computer to help, but I am running Windows 7 on a x64-based PC. I currently have no games or anything installed and am running McAfee Internet Security.

Thanks in advance,

EC
