no sound on my laptop

the past couple of days my laptop's sound has basically disappeared. it came back yesterday but today it isn't playing again. i went into the device manager and the sound devices are working properly, so they say. the computer shows as if sound is playing but i hear nothing.

i have an hp pavilion dv6 notebook pc
