Black screen on login

I am looking at a friends Lenovo T500 laptop which has a problem.

When the Laptop starts up it will proceed as normal to the point of logging in, once you have entered your username and password it will start the login process and the screen will go black with the cursor on the screen and that is as far as it goes. I can move the mouse and the cusor will move a round the screen but the screen is black. I have tried logging in with several accounts and all are the same. The only account I can login in on is the laptop admin account under Safe Mode. I have even made a new account but this only presented me with a blue desktop (no task bar icon keyboard shortcuts etc.).

I have disabled the graphics drivers but that made no difference, I have checked the registry hkey local machine down to window login (cant remember the exact path) for explorer.exe and everything was correct. explorer.exe is on the laptop and has the same permission as my window 7 pc so that looks ok.

When logged in as admin in normal mode, if I press ctrl-alt-del I get the option to run task manager, I have done this and there is no explorer.exe. running (which I believe is the problem). In task manager I have gone onto the application tab and then clicked on new task and tried to run explorer.exe but it comes back with an error "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022) click to close the application". I have googled the error but their seems to be a lot of suggestion, not sure I want to start trying each one.

I have scanned the hard disk with 3 different anti virus products (removed the hard disk and put it in caddy for two of them, one online) and nothing was found. I tried doing an upgrade install but that complained that I was in safe mode. Restore to a previously good configuration is not an option (no restore point).

Anybody have any suggestions?
