Hi
Apologies, I can't download SysInfo as I'm on a work PC and not at home. The background to this is as follows:
PC is a Win 7 Home Premium desktop, 64 bit, SP1.
All was working fine yesterday evening. Then Windows Update downloaded this update, and I gave it the go ahead to install it: http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/3001554.
A few minutes later the browser (Sleipnir) stopped responding. I noted that the clock had also stopped at 2244 (about two minutes previously). I had to press the power off key to do a forced shutdown.
I tried to reboot the PC and it got to the Windows desktop, with icons. But there were no icons in the system tray, and the cursor was just spinning in the middle of the screen.
The system loaded into both safe mode and safe with networking, so I did a malwarebytes scan (no issues) and an sfc/scannow scan (which also reported no issues).
I tried to reboot to windows normally and had the same issues with the system tray icons as before. Clicking on desktop program icons (eg Kaspersky AV) didn't do anything - cursor was still just spinning.
I then used Macrium reflect to restore an image from last Sunday. The PC then booted into Windows as normal, and all was well for a few minutes.
The system then started to display the same behaviour as the first time the problem arose, with the system just hanging.
It tried to download the windows update again and I told it to hide that update (I don't watch DVD anyway).
So that's where I am. I can load the Sunday image through reflect and run it for a few minutes. Or I can start windows normally and everything hangs at the desktop with nothing in the system tray. I've left it about three minutes so far.
Is this likely to be something to do with the DVD update affecting sometining? On one occasion the Windows desktop was loaded but then the screen went black.
If it is, should I try and stop the action centre notifying me about windows update settings from safe mode, or take some other action?
My only other systems are a tablet and phones, so I would like to solve this if I can.
Cheers
Dilip
