Haunted by icon

I deleted some files. One of them left an icon on my desktop. Every time I try to remove it, Windows says it is no longer on my C-drive and it can't remove it because it can't find it. I have been able to copy it, rename it, etc, but I can't get it off my desktop, no matter what I try.
Any ideas out there?
