What is going on?

Today I received a phone call from 1-855-244-9273 (return # given). Call was from a non-American Accent telling me that viruses and malware are on my pc. He was very persistent after I told him that I had good security, and he insisted that I am not protected by my antivirus SW. He said his name was George Cameron; also it was a very bad connection. I asked questions like where did you get my phone #; he said he got it from Microsoft.

He had me use the “keyboard” to go-to “Computer Management” on my:
eMachines (Mod. EL1850)
Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1
All update installed
Norton 360 Premier Edition

Looked at the “Computer Management/System Tools/Event Viewer/Custom Views/Administrative Events”

There are a lot of “Events” (about 7,000, Error/Warning). He then had me try to delete one, just to see if I could; I could not. Then wanted me to enter “iexplore Join.me” into “run”. I did go to “join.me” in Firefox, where he wanted me to load the SW and give access to my computer. Told him “I need to establish trust", but he only argued.

I took his name and # and told him I would call him back after checking it out.

Question 1: Is this a scam? Sure smells like one to me.
Question 2: Is there a problem with my Computer having so many Events in this section? I am not familiar with Windows 7.

Please advise. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
