Black screen of death

I have an older dell latitude D610 laptop and recently went to turn it on and just as soon as the loading screen goes off it turns black with a cursor in the left hand top of the screen. That's all it does. On other computers i' ve had you could press F8 on the load screen and load windows from an earlier point but this one only has F2 and F12. I need help please
