I have a laptop running Win 7, 64 bit. I had to run my recovery software and turn my laptop to the "out of the box" state. Before I ran the recovery, I backed up all my files onto a USB hard drive made by Western Digital and used their supplied software to back everything up in my USER folder (i.e. Documents, My Photos, My Music, etc). After I ran the system recover, I installed the WD software and ran the retrieval process. The files were transferred back to where I had them before but when I try to open them I get an error message. For instance when I try to open a photo I get the following message: "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location".
I contacted WD for assistance and they sent me a link on how to take owner ship of files by the following steps:
Right click on Folder, Properties, Security Tab, Advance button, Owner Tab, Edit, then I select my user account in the change owner to, check the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, and click Apply. When I do this, I get a dialogue showing taking ownership of...and it scrolls through all my files. Then I get a message saying the ownership has changed. When I close all the Property boxes, I go to open a file and get the same error message. I even logged off, restarted, shutdown and restarted and still cannot access the file.
At first I though maybe my files were corrupted somehow, but I can right click on one individual file and do the following steps:
Properties, Security, Add, enter my User Account name, Check Full Control under Allow and click Apply. Once I do that I can then view the file. I have tried to do these steps by right clicking on the folder and get an Access Denied for each and every file.
I don't have time to grant me permission to each and every individual file. I need help on how to resolve this security problem. I know my files are there and that they can be opened. Please help. I contacted WD to let them know that their advice didn't work and they said to contact Microsoft Support. When I contacted them they wanted $99 to link to my computer and do something that I most like can do but just can't figure it out in 5 minutes.
I will appreciate any help you can give me.
