Windows 7 won't show Java (Java 7 update 60) or XP mode. Both are installed (about 12 times each) but are apparently invisible. Every website (including Java) that I visit can't see Java and tells me to install it. I do, but it doesn't help. I have tried IE, Firefox, and Chrome browsers. Java Control panel says Java is enabled. It is listed in my programs folder. I have removed older versions, and done everything Oracle tells me to do.
...But it just seems to be invisible.
I have the same (or very similar) problem with XP mode. It is installed (and says so), it claims it will take me to the XP window, but never does. It just hangs up telling me it will open the window in a few seconds. I let it run all night, and the same thing was on the screen the following morning. It never appears in the start menu as it claims it will. (My machine is not equipped for hardware Virtual, but Microsoft claims it has patched XP Mode to use software only.)
I can probably live without Java, but I really need XP mode because Microsoft improved Windows so much that a number of my programs no longer run (even in compatibility mode with XP SP3)and my Visioneer scanner can't be installed.
I have considered abandoning Windows in favor of some version of Linux, but I think that can only turn out worse. I have tried re-installing W7, but it refuses to allow it, because it is now, (after hundreds of updates) older than the current version. (Nice touch, Microsoft.)
I don't want to re-format my c-drive, so any help here will be greatly appreciated.
