Make GMail the default "send to"

This post may be an exercise in futility however, I will try anyway.
Before preparing this post I conducted a search on this forum about making Gmail the default "send to" email. I saw numerous posts about installing a Gmail notifier which I tried with no successful results plus an add on was installed that changed my home page etc. I had to perform a system restore because I could not delete it.

For several years I used Windows Live Mail supplied by my ISP and then they changed to a different email web bases email program. When I used Windows Live Mail and clicked the "send to" link, Windows Live Mail would open but when my ISP changed email programs, of course that no longer worked. Eventually I closed my Hotmail account because it was hacked and opened a Gmail account. Somewhere in my system I was able to designate Gmail as the program to open when I clicked on the mail icon or the "send to" link. Now for some reason when I click on the mail tab in IE10 or on the "send to" link, Outlook wants to open however my computer is not configured to use Outlook and I don't want to use it.

All of the responses I viewed while conducting a search on this subject indicated that it was impossible or I could configure Outlook to open in GMail. (if I phrased that properly) Many other individuals have the same problem as I but there has to be a way other than installing another program or configuring Outlook. Maybe an answer has surfaced since those many questions were posted. I originally was able to use Gmail by clicking on "send to" and didn't install anything to do it so there has to be an option. Any replies are appreciated.
