win 7 backup & restore hlep needed

I have the windows backup set to save my important folders to my second drive.

the backup file keeps getting larger (now many gigs).

does the program ever start a new backup file?

when I first used it a few years back, it would start a fresh file periodically so
I could delete old backups.

is it me or is it microsoft??
