Windows update problems

Hello. I had to replace a 1tb, the same as the original, hard drive in my Gateway dx4831 because it died. I tried to recover the system with disks that I made when I first started it up. Now I find that Widows Update does not work. When I click on check for updates I get a message “Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not currently running. You may need to restart your computer”. Restarting the computer does not work. I’ve also checked in Services and the service is running. Microsoft fix it reports that there are missing or corrupted files but it can’t fix the problem. Could it be that my recovery disks are damaged, this is the first time that I’ve used them. My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I found new recovery disks on the net. Do you think that this is what I need? I’ve also seen that a new copy of Windows 7 is pretty reasonably priced since the release of Windows 8. This is very frustrating can someone help? Any input would be much appreciated.
