A few days ago High Definition audio in my 64 bit Windows Home Premium system just disappeared. It was working the night before and the next morning it wasn't working. HDMI audio still works fine. There were no software or hardware changes prior to this audio problem.
I am using an Asus M4A785-M motherboard with VIA VT17085 8 channel integrated audio. The Device Manager shows the High Definition Audio controller and says the device is working properly. Yet I have no sound. The HD Audio Controller is enabled in BIOS and until just a short time ago Windows 7 saw my speakers as the default playback device. Windows told me that the current driver was up to date. If I went to speaker setup and chose anything other than Stereo, I could hear the test sound through my speakers. However, if I tried to play an audio file when set up that way, I could hear nothing. I know this is a software issue and not a hardware one since this is a dual-boot system with Windows 7 and Linux Mint. In Linux Mint there are no audio problems. High Definition Audio and HDMI audio/video play just fine.
Thinking that there might possibly be a newer driver, I uninstalled the HD Audio driver and went to the Asus support page for my board. It turns out that the driver that was installed was, in fact, the latest driver, so I downloaded it again and attempted to re-install it but could not do so. I got a message saying that the installer could not find the HD Audio device! Not sure how that could be. Anyway, that's the way things stand now. No High Definition audio, just HDMI audio. The difference now is that the system no longer sees my speakers as working. They are labeled as "Not plugged in" . This is all a bit frustrating and at this point I have no idea what to do next. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
