Hi everyone

This is my sister's laptop so the past history is a bit sketchy but a while back it got infected and a local computer shop reloaded the OS. Ever since then it has got progressively worse ie. netsvc takes all the memory on startup for around 20mins. It is basically not useable until it settles down. After that it is fine.

It is running 64bit with 2Gbps of RAM but we have a 32bit OS disk.

I don't know what it was originally running before it got infected but my sister says it worked a lot better.

So would reloading the 32bit version help based on how much memory this laptop has or are there other things I can look at ?

Thanks for any help.

I am trying to help a relative get her Win-7 system running properly. The machine boots up apparently normally but when the desktop is presented the machine is essentially unusable. You can't open anything, you can't drag a window around, etc. But after a delay of 10 minutes to a half hour or so, it settles down and runs pretty well. If you had tried to open applications while it was bogged down, when it finally decides to run properly, all of the backed up operations finally take place.

I didn't get a good chance to look into this, but I did install a system monitoring utility that displays a live monitoring icon in the system tray that reflects cpu loading. The utility is an alternative task manager. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any excessive cpu activity, no excessive disk activity, and no significant network activity. So, what the heck is going on?

I can come up with only two plausible theories. Disk is failing, or perhaps some sort of rootkit? A full scan with Malewarebytes didn't find anything, nor did a run of the memory check utility that is built into Win-7.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on how to diagnose this mess. One problem is that I don't have ready access to the machine. The owner lives on the other side of town, and is unlikely to let me bring the thing home to let me work on it.

Getting BSOD's frequently

Just today I have gotten four BSOD's. I have no idea why other than it seems to have to do with either my graphics card or my graphics drivers. But it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem since I have done stress tests on pretty much all parts of my PC and it hasn't shown any faults.

I have included all the dumpfiles from the BSOD's I have gotten today. If someone could point out the problem and help me fix it, I would be forever in your debt.

HP Recovery Manager Stopped After 30 Discs!

Well, I did something stupid I think. I was using Dupe to try to remove duplicate files from my very sick PC and I think I deleted necessary system files. The PC will not restart, but I thought I was in great luck when the recovery manager popped up and suggested I make a backup and then restore the system to factory settings. I have needed to do this for a LONG time, but keep putting it off. I couldn't believe when it told me I needed 38 DVDs for backup (4.7 GB each). My sweet husband ran out and got the DVDs and I had completed disc 30 when it stopped and I got an error something like "your partition doesn't have enough memory on it."

NOW WHAT?????????????????????? I've virtually "wasted" 30 DVDs and I still don't have a working PC! I am about ready to just say screw it and wipe it without backing up, but I really don't want to lose music and pictures from the hard drive.

I have a call into a local PC repair person who was recommended by a friend, but I am virtually stuck!

Does anyone have any suggestions? For more information see my other thread from February. Ugh!

Oh I am using hubby's brand new Dell PC with Windows8 to post this. In my opinion, something on this system is very wrong. I could grow old waiting for it to process anything! There is virtually nothing on this PC and it took me over an hour to scan 4 pages to email! Either way, we desperately need a PC repair person but if anyone has any suggestions on how to at least get my PC back up and running, I would be greatly appreciative!

About to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit W7 Pro - looking for opinions..

Hi Everyone,

I have an HP laptop with Windows 7 32Bit Professional installed. I want to 'upgrade' to the 64Bit version, but I also understand that doing so is not a straight forward process.

I am wondering if I can take the following approach to the upgrade?
  • Backup all (relevant) files using 'Backup & Restore' (Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Backup and Restore)
  • Install a new hard drive
  • Using the HP Recovery Disks restore the computer to factory defaults (a 64Bit recovery disk was provided)
  • Perform Windows Updates
  • Reinstall required software (business programs, etc)
  • Restore the files originally backed up using 'Backup & Restore'
My primary goal is to ensure no data loss. However my secondary goal is to perform the upgrade as quickly as possible. I understand that a new hard drive is not required, however I intend on installing an SSD!

If anybody has any suggestions regarding issues that they can see with my proposed method, or if you know of a better / quicker way can you please share?

Kind Regards,

Davo

Hi guys Im Stelios , new here, I'm having a situation here with my pc regarding a Windows shortcut, the one in the title. All default windows shortcuts work fine ,all of them but the win +x ... My system is a desktop Windows 7 64bit and on my searching around the net , I found out that Windows Mobility Center is by default deactivated on desktops, on the other hand I found and correctly use these instructions. Now I'm able to use Windows Mobility Center but without the use of that specific shortcut. Whenever I try the shorcut, that known ''bing'' sounds and then nothing. I also tried this and this. please help.

Hello

I have just installed a WD 6TB Green Hard Drive for storage as I have an SSD as my C drive. A 5-minute job, I thought! Wrong....... Here I am, 4 hours later still looking at the screen!

The problem is: I have 3541.03GB of unallocated space and when right click to extend the volume, the 'extend volume' is greyed out.

I don't know why this is happening or how to fix it.

This is a brand new drive and there is no data on it at the moment. I enclosing a screen shot of the problem.

Anyone got a clue please ???

Thank you.

for some reason something keeping me from getting on facebook can you help

Solved: Additional Information on my desktop "computer"

I’ll try to explain, I hope you will understand.

When I click on “Computer”, using windows 7-64
I get “favorites” that has my desktop info,
Plus I get down below after my drives, the files that are on my Desktop.
I used to only see “desktop, my documents, and my drives.
Not all the desktop information was below that.

How can I not see the desktop information below my drives, or is it possible.
I think that may be in “folder options”, or “Organize”, but I’m not sure
I tried them all, but could not remove the desktop information below drives.

I don’t want to delete them, but just don’t want to see them below my removable drives, or hard drives.
Thanks

You guys sure do help me out a lot, and it is appreciated.

Why one computer slower than another?

I am responsible for the computers at my workplace, of which there are five. All but one came with Windows 7 Professional installed and they are fine.

There is one that is from 2007 and it originally had XP on it, but last year I installed Window 7 Professional on it.

For some reason, the 2007 computer is markedly slower than the other computers and I can't figure out why. I've been comparing it to mine, which is from 2009 and see no reason why the 2007 should be slower than the 2009.

Both disk drives are 7200 RPM, both computers have 2 GB RAM.
The 2007 computer has an Intel Pentium D CPU 2 GHz, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors.
The 2009 computer has an Intel Core2 Duo CPU E7500 2.93 GHz, 2 Cores, 2 Logical Processors.
The 2007 computer has more disk drive space (298 GB) than the 2009 machine (149 GB).

The 2007 computer has only three user accounts, whereas mine has six. The 2007 computer has much less software installed on it. Both have Norton Internet Security installed. They are on the same LAN.

I maintain them so that they are cleaned up and defragged on a regular basis.

What am I missing?

I have the following issue with Lotus Notes:
When I first used lotus on my home PC, it worked fine. For no reason, I get the following messages now:
a. Bookmark File does not exist (I then click 'ok')
b. You cannot quit Notes because a dialog is active. Switch to notes first, close the dialog and then exit Notes. (I then click 'ok')
c. File does not exist: mailbox.ntf (I then click 'ok')
What is it??

I need suggestions for how to fix this on my Windows 7 computer,

The problem started today. All that has been applied was Automatic Windows Updates. The error message goes away as soon as it comes up. I have looked on-line all day for various advice and fixes but nothing has worked!

A computer guru is likely going to help me with this, because I don't want to mess up my computer and have to reinstall Windows. UGHHHH! This is a Dell PC running Windows 7. Windows is all up to date. This is what I have done so far:

1.) I ran System File Checker
2.) Ran Check Disk
3.) System File Checker said it found a few errors that it could not fix.
4.) I also turned the Windows Net Framework On enabling 3.5, no change.
5.) I do not have Net. Framework 3.5 on my system. I have the latest one, 4.5. I checked and Net Framework 3.5 according to Microsoft is not supported by Windows 7.
6.) Other options include updating drivers. I was led to a scam site at one of the Windows 7 forums, so I did not install the recommended driver update software.

What suggestions have you guys had in fixing this error, other than having to reinstall Windows? Thanks!

Jack

Could you run me through your battery of tests to see if I have any problems?
I have a couple of small but tolerable bugs maybe caused from using a registry cleaner?

Win7 search not working for secondary hard drive

$

I'm running Win7 on a computer w/ an SSD boot drive and a 3TB data drive. For some reason, every time I search for a file on the 3TB drive, it says "No items match your search" -- even for files that I know are there. Searches on the boot drive work fine.

I tried rebuilding the index on the 3TB drive, but it didn't make any difference. What else can I try??
