Hi Everyone - Thanks to all the knowledgeable and kind people here for taking your time up to help people fix our computers. - Standing Ovation for ya'all - if i may....
I have a question about storing my programs on an external drive - and having windows 7 ult 64 - my current OS - on a small c drive where its about the only thing. Then I would clone that drive - and god forbid if I have a total windows crash - like I did twice in the last 3 weeks - I'd switch drives - reformat and reclone the sick drive and I'd hardly miss a beat.
Right now I have 2 partitions on my main HD with C mainly for windows and Y for data and programs - and it seems to be fine BUT would programs work just as well coming from an external drive - provided of course thats where theyre loaded during install?
And if so, would cloning the c drive allow me to change from one to another and work correctly? - Except for programs that were installed after they were cloned.
If anyone has any experience like this or an educated guess about it I'd be interested to hear from you. Thank you.
As a note - I'd been crash free for some years - but twice after putting my preference of not starting a new war on a facebook post - my computer froze like never before - it buzzed and nothing at all would move no matter what I did or how long I waited. Once i turned it off and back on - it wouldn't boot into windows but froze on the 4 color display during startup. It happened a few weeks ago and I asked about finding a log for it here - and it happened again a couple days ago.
For the record - if anyone else has the same issue come up -
I used a Windows 8 installation disc - went to advanced tools -repair current OS - windows 7 - and it tried but said it could not repair it. It offers to start windows 7 normally - I click that and get the option to either start normally or the recommended choice of repair startup.(I can't seem to get these choices to come up unless I go about it this way - is there a simpler way to get the "repair startup" option to come up in Windows 7?.)
Anyway - I choose repair startup - it says it will take a few hours and it does. The first time I had the issue, it said repaired - at the end and it worked. This time it said it could not repair with error code 0x490 - BUT upon reboot - it DID work. I'm about to run Super antispy, malwarebytes and spybot. This time it suggested running SFC when it said it couldn't repair it - but even though it did repair it, I ran SFC - through Glary utilities - and it finished overnight - so I'm not sure if it replaced any files. Is there a log for that?
Thanks in advance
Dave
