I'm not sure whether the problem is with my system settings, my hardware, software, a virus, etc.
But, over the last week and a half I discovered that all my computer settings, e.g., screen background, FFox favorites/apps, and other weird things disappeared if I shut down the computer. Also, I've got Office 2010 set up, and all my documents disappeared into the computer OS icon (that was pretty freaky, it looked like everything had been wiped and took a lot of hunting to locate my content!) To be honest, I haven't set this system up as well as it should be, a combination of me, HP, and new Windows/Office contortions.
Today was the second time; the first time it happened I thought some type of odd glitch had occurred with a Windows update, but when it happened again today, I thought I'd better check it out.
The computer is an HP desktop. I first noticed the event after I changed some settings in the Control Panel, as follows, approximately. Since I got this computer last fall, it's had a habit of going to sleep after a random amount of time not in use, say 15 - 30 min. I wouldn't mind, but I assume it's the reason my internet mail connex get messed up, so I have to close everything down and reboot FFox. So last week in the Power Options I changed the Sleep setting to 5 hours. I think it was Balanced to begin with and still is. But I may have also changed another setting, but looking at the Control Panel nothing jumps out at me.
Can someone give me some suggestions about where to start checking things out? I've got AVG and Adobe Acrobat installed stupid McAfee, in case that provides any other helpful info. I recently installed a new graphics program, Serif DrawPlus X6, but I don't recall anything else specifically. I generally don't visit sites that might be risky, tho it's possible I picked up something random.
many many thanks for suggestions!
