Problem with 7 and Aol

I used to have an account with aol till 18 months ago but still use that account as it contained my favourites.
Today however when I click on the Aol desktop icon it will not load.
I have tried downloading another version (I have 9.6) and installing but all I get is install unsuccessful due to other applications running.
Nothing is running as far as I am aware I did however remove my firewall in case that was it but still the same
Aol icon is in start upas well
