some desktop icons suddenly display as thumbnail image

Weirdest thing, that's happened a couple of times now: When I switched on my computer today (Windows 7 64 bit), some of my desktop icons displayed as thumbnail images, rather than the symbols that are usually displayed.

Usually all of my desktop icons show the symbol of the program that opens that particular file format, like the Foxit symbol for PDF, or VLC symbol for FLV or MP3. The only files that have been consistently showing an thumbnail image rather than a symbol are MP4 files (my previous computer - an XP - didn't do that).

Now some - not all - of my PDF and ODT files are displaying as a thumbnail image of the first page of the document.

The last time this happened I tried changing a setting somewhere to never display thumbnails, but that also affected the way that photos were displayed in my 'Windows Libraries', and that really didn't work for me, so I changed the setting back. A couple of days later the icons went back to normal on their own.

I'd really rather be able to see the symbols on my desktop, than thumbnails, but if I absolutely had to, I could live with it the way it is currently. It makes my maneuvering through the files on my desktop more difficult however, especially since this is not consistent. More importantly though, I'm puzzled by why this is happening, and unexplained changes like this are very disconcerting.

Does anyone have any insight into this, and know how to fix it? Thanx so much.
