Wandering pointer on my computer screen

Hi,

I have had a problem with my pointer acting up on my Toshiba laptop (W7 Home Premium) in the last couple of weeks. Every couple of days, the pointer will either will only move sideways, it will resize pages (zoom in and out) or often turn into this 4-headed arrow thingy. It becomes very hard to select an icon, say a Close button and it generally acts up.

Apart from the last time (when I shut the laptop down for a few minutes), an OS restart does the trick.

I run Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware weekly (nothing comes up) and have up-to-date antivirus (AntiVir) and ZoneAlarm firewall.

Any ideas what is causing this problem - does something need recalibrating?
