Good Morning! This is my first post. I like to think that I am somewhat tech savvy, but I have no idea where to start with this problem:
I bought a used HP Pavillion desktop computer for my mother. It has Windows 7 Home Premium OS. The girl I bought it from told me that she did the factory reset using the onboard tool. All of the "included freebies" such as the free trials of Norton, Office 2010, etc. are on the desktop.
When I plug an ethernet cord in to the desktop, nothing happens. The red "X" appears in the system tray over the network connection icon. When I click on that icon, and open the Network & Sharing center, I see the computer, and it says it is trying to connect to Public Workgroup.
Any other computer that I try to plug in to this same ethernet connection works just fine, connects straight away with no issues. I have plugged my own desktop, running Windows Vista, in and it works just fine. When I click on "connect to the internet" on the 'new' computer and try to set up a connection, it acts like I am connecting to a wireless connection and asks for a username & password. I thought if you plugged an ethernet cord in to a computer, it connected to the internet. So why is it asking for a username & password? I don't understand.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really wanted to give my mother this computer so that she can communicate with our family via email, Facebook, etc.
Sincerely,
Butterflyeleven
