Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Disabled

When I booted up, the administrator account was not showing, only Other, and it wanted to know name/pw. I began doing reboots. One time my account came up under the Welcome indicator, and I got in. I got the server busy popup and Firefox was not acting right, so rebooted, and again, no admin acct. This last time, when I rebooted, it finally just went to desktop. I see that it says AV is disabled, but the orange ball in the lower corner says it is on. The Solve PC issues says I need to turn on AV, but when I open the box, it shows to be on and the program says it is on. I am afraid now to reboot! Please bear with me, I am not computer savvy, ie, you can assume I need to be told how to boot in safe mode, if that becomes necessary. Thanks for your help!
