Solved: files invisible Windows explorer

I have recently completed a significant update of Windows 7 and have noticed many of old archived files are invisible in windows explorer. I have gone through the exercise of checking if they are hidden (they are not). I can check in Windows explorer properties and the number of files are reported but can not be seen. I know the name search and search for the file, it can be found and appears such that I can open it from the search box. A the same time the folder location is the one which says folder empty.

At the same time I can reopen the file from the word processing program where it is inventoried as a recent document but still is invisible to Windows explorer.

Also, the folder is checked as read only and I can not get the folder to be anything other than read only.

I have tried to copy the folder to a USB key and the folder copies but the files remain invisible but still show up as files in the properties of the folder. ie folder is labelled empty but property says there is one file in the folder.
