The User Profile Service failed the logon

I have recently switched on my acer laptop running windows 7 home premium after an off period of a few months,
The computer loads up to the point that it shows the user avatars and asks you to choose one. The thing is, it has never done this before, I am the only user and it only shows one avatar. I have never password protected it either so not seen the page, it normally loads straight to the page with wallpaper and icons.
If I click on the avatar I get
'The User Profile Service service' (duplication by the computer) 'failed the logon' and a box with OK in it.
When I click on the box it says 'logging off' and then goes back to the avatar page above.
I can't get it to go to the page that gives me a choice to load a safe mode as soon as I switch on, F5 or F8(was that just on XP and earlier?)
I once got a page that asked if I wanted to load windows 7 or do a disk check, I asked for and got a disk check but nothing changed, I still have the problem, the disk check was fine.
If I press F2 as soon as I switch on I get the settings page but this confirms there are no passwords set and nothing else is abnormal and goes to the above avatar page when I press F10.
I can't download and run TSG sysinfo as the computer won't let me in.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Matelot.
