Have a friend with a Dell computer running Win XP SP3, 32-bit. He wants to upgrade the OS to Win 7. The computer has an Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.80 GHz; ACPI \ GENUINE INTEL _._X 86 _ FAMILY_15 _ MODEL_3\_1. I have tried to talk him into INSTEAD getting a new, modestly priced Win 8.1 PC with at least a Core i3 CPU, because, given Murphy's Law, a month or two after he spends the $$ and aggravation to put Win 7 on it and find all the drivers, the HDD or mobo will fail
Microsoft's upgrade advisor says his computer can be upgraded to Win 7 32-bit, not 64-bit. I'm guessing that could be because the current OS is 32-bit, but I understand that most Pentium 4s contain both 32- and 64-bit instruction sets. Is that true, and if so, will he have any major problems with the update?
