Windows update really slow.

My wife started having problems on her computer a little over a week ago.
IE 11 would not load or run and some other issues.

I took a guess that the problem was the recently installed free Avast security I had just put on.

Uninstalled Avast and that helped some.
Did a system restore back a few days.
Also ran scans with malwarebytes and superantispyware and ran ccleaner.

Tried to do a windows update to bring everything current again and that's when real problems showed up. (Usually I have hers on automatic update)

The download and installation took 12 hours and was only on 4 of 13.
I selected "stop installation"

Restarted to clean out old stuff and now it's giving me the message "do not turn off or power off computer. Configuring 4 of 13 updates"

This has been going on for 14 hours or more.

What can I do?

Do I do damage if I power off and, maybe, restart in safe mode?

Thank you for your always great help
