Log in screen no loading, safe mode stops at classpnp.sys

Windows 7 login screen fails to load, just get a blank desk top with a cursor. Try to start in safe mode and it gets stuck at classpnp.sys and fails to progress. Chckdsk is auto running on power up. Feels like its running hotter than normal. It's a 5-6 yr old Toshiba Saltallite.
