Windows activation issue

I am working on a computer for a friend and have run into a very serious issue. First, let me explain the situation....She is 70 years and her husband passed away about a year and a half ago and she is having trouble with her computer and I agreed to help her as I am pretty computer savvy. When I booted the computer and it loads, it gives the "activation period has expired" error window and the desktop shows the windows not activated in the lower right corner. I have run the Validation tool and tried to repair the key from the internet. My biggest question is this, is there a way to tell if the computer is counterfeit or actually just past its activation period. It does give me the "you may be a victim of counterfeit software" message from time to time. Either way, I plan to buy a genuine copy of Windows 7 system builder OEM and install a fresh copy on it. Since the computer was bought from a company. I don't know the entire details on how the computer was obtained, but I do know the lady very well and know they are not the ones who did it. It sounds to me that they are indeed victims of counterfeit software. The version of windows is Windows 7 Enterprise if that helps any.
