"Windows Update Cannot Connect..." Error

Hi there!
I've been getting this message every time I tried to do an updates;

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.” on Windows 7 when checking for updates.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, I've "cleaned" up for some malware or viruses beforehand. So..I don't know why it's still not working.
