How identify and replace outdated drivers?

In passing, some program told me I had some outdated drivers. I didn't know if I could trust that source, and
wouldn't download anything from it, for fear of malware, etc.

But how can I identify any outdated or defective drivers, and replace them if necessary? Free, if possible safely, of course.
