Drive letters & auto play

Hi Everyone,

I have a problem which has just developed on my notebook running Win7.

:)I have just done a fresh install. Everything is working fine.

I have several different external hard drives that I use for backups etc. Every time I plug them in Auto Play starts fine and away I go... (both FAT32 and NTFS are fine)

:(But since I installed a program which worked fine but had compatibility issues - Photoshop Elements actually, allocated drive letters have to be set up E V E R Y time I use my hard-drives and obviously Auto Play does not start up as the drive is not recognised until reallocated a drive letter. This is very frustrating!

I have tried system restore to before Elements was installed but this did not fix the problem. I have also removed Elements but this has made no difference.

Something has changed but I don't know what. I could assign a permanent drive path... but I just want it all to happen automatically like before. I have looked online to no avail but I know you guys are awesome so will see if you can help.

Additional Information:

My 4gb USB stick still activates Auto Play every time.

Occasionally my printer stops working and tells me I need to 'reformat the disk?' I actually just got the same message right now when I plugged in my USB stick, having just unplugged one of the External Hard Drives after allocating a drive letter to it and using it. I unplugged it, plugged it in and it worked fine second time.

I also use a Conexant Dial-up modem which can be a pain to start. I have to plug it in a couple of times before it is 'recognised' after starting the notebook, and often get the message that it is 'not configured properly or has stopped working'. This can happen whether or not I am using the other drives. Once the modem is recognised it often does not connect 'in a timely manner' which is also frustrating and may not be at all related... or could be.

So this auto play and drive allocation comes standard with Win7 and it has always worked perfectly from new, through several fresh installs, over several years, withe a dozen or so different external hard drives, until last week

P.S. I previously had Elements installed and AutoPlay/Drive Allocation worked fine then ... so this may not be the reason.

Thanks heaps, I know you can help.. Jay : )
