I accidentally left the internet open overnight several days ago. The next day the wife says there is something wrong with the pc. I was floored by what I saw. The taskbar and start menu looked like the old windows 98 style. The pc is now very slow too.
Somehow there were several services not running. I went into services and found themes. it said themes was running but I restarted it and the desktop converted back to what it is supposed to be. The same thing with audio.
Several other things have gone awry also. I try to right click the open background of the desktop and the window fails to open. The little spinning (working) icon just spins and spins...eventually the window opens.
The pc seems to work ok but extremely slow. Plus I'm sure there are other things going awry but I'm not sure what.
When I go online browsing works well. It's slow getting there but once online the speed is back. Going from one site to another is slowed a bit but once there it works great. For example... navigating in this site is easy and fast. As is making this post.
It's very slow at booting up, and trying to navigate offline. Also the weird w/98 theme comes back on reboot. It takes a super long time to reboot.
I am using ATT U-verse for my connection. All other devices in the house are working great.
Please help me !!!!
I had a problem once before with another pc. It was missing DLL files. the system could not work correctly. I'm wondering if this is the case here. But at the same time...something had to happen to make this reaction.
I'm also afraid that some kind of adware or virus may have gotten in. With u-verse as a gateway I was thinking that it was keeping a lot of junk out. This may be a naïve way of thinking.
I'm a fix it kind of guy and I have had pcs since w/98. I've been working on this for a few days now and have tried some of the fixes here. I have tried running recover several times without success. With my experience....self taught...there's no telling what is all wrong with this thing...
One thing that I do know is I cannot stand for my pc to be sick. I work hard to keep it running good. It has tons of memory and usually runs lighting fast. I want my baby back.
One other thing. I had this computer built. I have the cd's that were used to build it...w/7 and utility. If nothing else I can use them... hopefully.
