Getting update notifications in systray

I just put in new Windows 7 machines and unlike my prior XP machines I seem to be getting the notifications that updates are available for Windows (and Acrobat etc) not in the systray where I will readily see them but instead in the notifications area that I only see when I click to access it. This is not cool since considerable time might pass before I know to install a Windows update and as we all know those are sometimes critical securities updates that one does not want to delay much in installing.

I have it set to "download but notify me before installing" and I prefer it that way so I can see what's going on and make choices.

I suppose if there's no other alternative I'll tell it to automatically install everything, but first I'd like to see if I can just get those icons to appear in the systray instead of the notifications area that's not visible without my manually accessing it.
