My 4 month old computer has today started to freeze shortly after Windows 7 starts up (it runs fine for several minutes then just locks up, the mouse still moves around so it hasn't frozen completely but windows explorer just stops working)
I have done a fair few hours of research on this and tried a few of the most common fixes (as this seems to be a rather common problem) but nothing has worked so far. I have never had a problem with Windows 7 and up until today, this computer worked fine with it.
The only programme I have installed in recent days was the Sony connection software for my new smartphone but I have tried uninstalling that and nothing changed. As far as I am aware, nothing else has been downloaded that could pose a threat to the system.
I attempted to run Norton incase the problem was a virus (unlikely as it is) but it wouldn't even let me open the norton programme. I have used msconfig to disable all startup programmes and have no problem running the computer in safe mode. I have installed and run both a quick and full scan with malwarebytes which has found nothing on either scan and chkdsk has also found no problems.
I attempted to use the "boot from last successful" option, but it still froze up so Windows is obviously registering it as a successful boot despite it freezing 5 minutes later.
I am at a loose end now with what to try next. I was simply going to back up my stuff (only 4 months of files so not much) and then do a clean install of the OS with a disc copy I have but the computer freezes long before I can successfully copy anything to an external drive (also I cannot get windows to find my SD card whilst in safe mode)
Anyone have an idea of how to fix this problem? I found this site by searching the problem and see a few people have requested help before so hopefully someone out there will be able to point me in the right direction.
