Laptop screen freezes on startup.

After a hard slam on the lid of my HP laptop -in order to shut it- it froze, I shut it down and when I opened it again it said 'loading files' or something like that for a few seconds, then it would only go as far the welcome screen and while the next screen should be the laptop accounts, it just freezes there, no accounts, welcome message gone and the screen "zoomed in". Every time I open it it's the same, even if I choose the repair mode that is offered at the beginning. Removed the battery, still the same. Is the damage too great, or is it something I can fix on my own?
