I recently installed Win7 on a new drive for a home system - no work connection or IT department involved; 'did a Windows Update (the second in as many days, and no problem before,) with something like 7 ea. of Important and Optional updates selected. On reboot and login I got an error message at lower right that said something like "Windows cannot connect to Group Policy Client" plus a whole lot of verbiage thereafter about checking the event log, etc., but it disappeared before I could do a screen grab and transcribe the whole thing.
What is this "Group Policy Client" thing? 'Sounds like some kind of hackware to allow someone else to access and control my system on the sly. I've read a little about it in posts here and elsewhere on the web, and it seems to be a Windows program, but everything everybody's posted on it almost immediately goes straight over my head.
- Do I need this running? If so, how do I get it to do so when the error message says it "cannot connect?" Others say that their similar error message is accompanied with being locked out of processes, but everything here seems to be working normally otherwise - adding to the fear of having been hacked;
- My User Profile says I'm logged in as Administrator, but since this GPC thing is supposedly connected to user accounts, is there something I need to worry about?
The bottom line is that I want to ensure the system is secure - except, of course for the friendly professional voyeur-pervs at the NSA (Hi boys and girls!) who presumably can't be locked out.
