windows 7, altering fonts

Hi guys-- I'm new to Windows 7. Hated to leave beloved XP. My problem is--in email I can't make the font alteration functions work. i.e. Bold, Italic, Underline, etc. The way I did it in XP was to highlight the word and click the Bold, etc. These functions do work ok in Word, though.
