Sony VAIO VPCEA36FM

A friend of my bfs got a virus on his laptop and it crashed. when My bf found out he offered to see if I would take a look at it. So when I got this thing It was trying to reinstall windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I downloaded microsfts Iso for this as close to the original one as I could get and used their tool to create a bootable usb. My issue comes in after the install. At times the OS won't boot and i get an OS cannot be found error. My other problem is that when it does load, it takes 45 minutes to load the desktop!! I updated all the drivers (which was wierd cuz each one took an excess of 30 mins to install) and I scanned with AVAST Antivirus, but to no avail. I'm beginning to think sony set these machines up so you have to use their recovery media in order to restore the laptop. According to the owner, this is the second time a virus crashed it, so I know the recovery partition is deleted. I'm hesitant to reinstall windows 7 with a newer OEM version because using an older version took a whole day because the progress kept freezing. and once the desktop loads, after about 20 minutes of battling all of a sudden it leaps into hyper mode and isn't slow at all. Is there a specific driver I should double check? I'm training in IT Security and have done lots of repairs to computers, but i've never worked with a sony vaio before and its making me worried that even some of the most basic first steps are becoming much more difficult than normal. any Ideas, insight, or inspiration would be nice. Oh and I really don't want to fall back on the recovery media because sonys own website says they might not have it any more and the only way to know for sure is to call (which I HATE talking to service reps over the phone):mad::cry:cry
