computer stops responding after 15min of inactivity - can't find cause

I can't figure this one out...

It seems explorer and other programs stop responding after about 15 minutes of inactivity. (I cannot ctrl alt del or anything)

I disabled all optional services and start up programs via msconfig

I changed my hard drive to not spin down on inactivity and not go to sleep



If I have a chrome window open (say gmail) I can continue to open emails and even retrieve items and receive new emails - but I cannot open a new tab, and if I try to redirect to a new website at the bottom of chrome it says "waiting for cache"


It seems like a hard drive or l1 cache type issue - but how do I diagnose further?

There is nothing in the logs that seem to be useful...


any suggestions?
