My laptop, about 4yrs old but running well until recently, suddenly does not 'see' anything plugged into any of the USB ports. iPhone no longer is read or launches itunes when plugged in, and though the machine makes the normal noise when the SDRAM card is inserted, it's not seen.
As background, the computer recently started having problems starting up, requiring disk check and scan disk which run into roadblocks and warn of imminent failure. If I skip scan disk I she'll start normally and work w.out other problems, except now it's not reading USB or the card reader.
Also tried backing everything up (since I know the machine is due for a reload) but can't get the Seagate drive to be seen either, i.e. when plugged in via USB nothing in Win Explorer.
Have run MWB and spybot which found nothing nefarious. Had a work IT guy look at it last week and he suggested I get a new hard drive and reload Win., which I'll do. But at the moment I just need the USB and card readers to work!
