Windows Freezing after start up

Hi guys

I have a Toshiba Laptop running Wondows 7. Bought just over 2 years ago and used mainly just for Ipod synching/itunes etc.

Recently its developed a fault where by once logged in it Freezes compeltely (all animation, unable to Ctrl+Alt+Delete) etc.

it has the same issue in Safe Mode. Initially Safe mode would last a bit longer before freexing buyt now the opposite is true. "Normal" mode works for longer than Safe Mode (Safe Mode freezes as it logs in and the Windows Help screen loads)

Tried Memcheck and no RAM issues were reported

Ran malware and no virusses picked up

Tried to run CHKDSK but it freezes in Stage 2 (43% and now at 19%)

System restore just freezes at "initialising" stage resulting in several failed restore points (now it says no restore points exist)

Tried to load the event viewer before it crashed and all i could see were a load of exceptional errors that seem to refer to the graphics card?

Windows update won't launch (Fix it just says "unresiolved issues")

Anyone got any thoguhts on anything else to do/test?

I have a tonne of music and phots etc on the hard drive that i really don't want to lose (had it backed up elsewhere but that Hard Drive failed last week............sods law)

Can anyone offer any potential things that may help? I can acecss the internet (Just) and download/run the odd program........but CPU usuage seems scarily high and as soon as i try to open Itunes it just freezes.

Sorry for the lack of technical info but everytime i try to run event viewer now it just locks up
