Windows explorer restarts every time I right click

Hi,

I have been using my computer all day without any issue. I just did a full backup of my computer onto an external drive (as I do most days) and when it finished, I then went to copy and paste a file on my computer. As soon as I right-click anything on the computer I get Windows explorer has stopped working and it restarts. I tried restarting the computer, same thing. I tried restarting with last good configuration, same thing. I tried starting in safe mode and it doesn't happen. I then restarted into normal mode and it still happens. I am quite sure this is not a virus as I haven't done anything likely to have caused that all day and there are no other symptoms. I have not installed anything new - software or hardware. I think it is a case of a file becoming corrupted. I hope someone can guide me through the best options to try and fix this. I really really really don't want to do a complete reinstall of windows. I would rather not do a system restore either as I did one once before with Windows 7 and it took hours and I have read other people having issues with that and with it hanging.

I am wondering about whether to do a scannow system file check?

PLEASE NOTE THIS HAS BEEN RE-EDITED A FEW TIMES

Edit: I have searched online that some people have related this to context menu handlers .... please note that this does not happen if I right click the empty desktop, or an icon on the desktop, or within a folder directory. But if I right click any file or folder within a folder it happens
