Serial#: CNF946BJBZ Product #: VM238UA
Windows 7 Home Premium SP/1 64-Bit

When this computer was first brought to me there was a quick BSOD that flashed across the screen and then it would basically shut down. Customer said son had been doing multiple scans just prior to(?) this happening. She indicated that this problem has persisted for a couple of months.

Turned on unit, hitting the f8 button to load windows options and selected "Last known good configuration". this allowed Windows to load and no problem loading nor BSOD since. What little of the BSOD screen was readable (it was cropped) it appears that an installation of some sort was aborted improperly. Can't be sure of this as the screen was small.

When Windows loads there is immediately an error box that comes up with the following error:

___________________________________________________________________________ ________
SmartMenu.exe Bad Image
___________________________________________________________________________ ________
C:\Windows\system32\d2d1.dll either is not designed to run on Windows or it contains and error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vender for support

I let HP website run diagnostics as far as updates are concerned and installed the three updates that it recommended, though it looks as though these updates have little to do with the problem:

1) Atheros wireless LAN Driver for Windows 7
2) HP Quick Launch Buttons
3) Synaptics Touchpad

I then ran the following anti-malware programs:

a) Malwarebytes
b) Adwcleaner
c) Superantispyware
d) Spybot (also immuinized)

I haven't performed a scan yet with MSE but plan to before completing servicing of this PC.

Even though the malware software found and removed quite a few "infections", the error box still persists.

Looking at Device Manager, there are no warnings and everything seems copasetic.

To discontinue having the error box pop up I have deselected SmartMenu.exe from starting up when the computer starts up. This is not a real solution, I know. In Program and Features it appears that I installed an updated version of this program yesterday as there are two incidences of installation of this program; one dated in June and the other yesterday (Jan. 22).

Any suggestions and guidance would be great. thank you.
