Hard Drive performance on Win 7

I have a recent install of windows 7 that seems to access the hard drive a lot.
Is there any changes that I can make to improve hard drive performance?

Also, after I install Win 7 in notice that it updates almost every time I turn off the
computer. Is there a way to stop it from updating all the time?
