Please help me diagnose this problem

Hello,

My mom's eMachines system which is just over a year old has a serious problem. I could use some direction as to how to diagnose the problem.

This computer crashed and would not boot into Windows. At one point I saw the BSOD. Following that, Startup Repair failed. So I went ahead with booting into the recovery partition and choose the option to reinstall the OS but keep all the user files.

At this point, the system seemed to be okay, yet shortly after problems started again. Periodic freezing that would require pulling the power, and also, the system not coming out of sleep mode, again forcing me to pull the power.

Is it safe to assume that this cannot be a software issue because I reinstalled the OS, or does the method I used via the recovery partition not completely replace the existing system?

What is the next step? System logs? If so, which ones? I can post them here if that would help. And/or is there a way to run diagnostics on the hardware?

Thank you for any help that you can give me.
