Hello,
*
I have recently assembled my first custom PC (build specs are below). Everything went smoothly and it started up on the first ry. However, the company I ordered the hard drive from has been taking their sweet time on shipping. So, I decided to wipe an old drive that has been collecting dust for the last 6 months (in an external drive enclosure so not literally dusty) and use that to install Windows 7 and then the plan was to use the smaller drive for Windows and select software and the larger new drive for storage.
*
CPU ********************* AMD FX-4130 3.8GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard ** Asus M5A78L-M LX PLUS Micro ATX AM3+
Memory ************ Team Dark Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Storage ************** Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM (not delivered yet)
Video Card ******** ECS GeForce GTS 450 1GB
Wireless ************* Rosewill RNX-G300LX 802.11b/g PCI
Case ******************** Rosewill CHALLENGER ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply ** Thermaltake 650W ATX12V
*
The problem I am having occurs at the Windows installation (from USB). When I get to the Where do you want to install Windows? part of the setup process I get the following error message:
We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.
So, logically I went to the forums to try and locate the answer. So far I have done;
*
SHIFT F10
Start DISKPART.
Type LIST DISK
Type SELECT DISK
Type CLEAN ALL (took several hours)
Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
Type ACTIVE
Type FORMAT FS=NTFS
Type ASSIGN
Type EXIT twice
Then restart the process, didnt work
*
Second attempt was to use a partitioning tool. Went through the MiniTool Wizard and used
WIPE PARTITION > fill with ones and zeros (took almost 6 hours) > format partition NTFS > didnt work!
*
In my frustration I attempted to install Ubuntu 12.04 (from USB) > Worked perfectly!
*
As I said before, I am using an older hard drive that had previously had windows 7 on it. I am wondering if thats what is causing the problem and if so, how do I get around it. And yes, I do want windows and not just linux (I dual boot). The hard drive is:
*
Hitachi 320Gb 2.5 5200 RPM (pulled from my laptop after I upgraded)
*
Any help is appreciated.
*
Thanks,
GL

EDIT: I came across this thread and will try it when I get home from work but would still love any other suggestions!
