I have a Windows 7 rig that won't boot off of a full power down, but will sit at a black screen after the BIOS splash screen comes up. If I push the reset button, it starts up just fine.
I'm not sure if it's related to this, but I had a weird dual-boot setup for awhile. I had a Vista and Win7 dual boot, with Win7 as the primary drive (on two separate HDDs). I used a boot editor utility to clear the MBR (or whatever it was, it's been a long time) so that the Vista drive wouldn't show up as bootable, and would just boot straight to Win7. Then I too the computer to a local shop to get some work done, and when I got it back, the auto boot repair tool came up and repaired the Vista boot to also be bootable. So I was dual booting again, but that wasn't a big problem EXCEPT that there has been a windows update that won't apply, because it requires a shutdown, and then when it boots back up it never seems to apply the update, it just sits there at a black screen forever (like overnight).
So the failure to boot has been a problem for awhile, but hasn't been that big of a deal because I leave my system on all the time anyway, and used to rarely restart it. However, I backed up the VIsta drive to an external HDD, and removed it. Now, my system seems to bluescreen (or crash, of course never when I am in the room) several times a day, and ends up booting into the auto boot repair tool, which can't find any errors other than:
System files integrity check & Repair:
Failed. Error code 0x246
I'm out of ideas, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
