My laptop was running quite slow with opening certain programs and also many programs would become unresponsive if I tried to do too many things at once (Firefox and iTunes especially), and so I successfully ran registry and adware cleaners, and tried to run Malwarebytes (and alternatives), but found that I couldn't run a full scan without it becoming completely unresponsive and effectively crashing my computer. In the end I decided to just restore my laptop to factory settings hoping that that would be an easy way to get rid of whatever the problem was, but I'm still having the same issues with unresponsive programs and I can't even run a full antivirus scan without it getting stuck somewhere around 8% and I even tried to run Malwarebytes again but it couldn't go more than a couple of seconds before crashing. A massive amount of windows updates were installed, which took about 90 minutes to complete, but then it got stuck twice on the 'configuring windows' screen and I had to restart it to get it going again (after waiting about an hour each time) but the problems started before those updates, and are still going. I haven't really done much to screw it up since the factory restore - uninstalled some preloaded rubbish and installed Malwarebytes (then uninstalled it) OpenOffice, Firefox, iTunes and VLC player, and transferred some personal files back onto it.
It isn't completely unusable at all, it's just that I'm having to constantly use the task manager to shut down unresponsive programs, which I didn't have to do before. I would appreciate any help you guys can offer, let me know if you need more info. Thanks in advance.
