Problems with windows 7 home screen after update

I just did an update on my computer (can't remember what for) and it had me restart my computer. After the restart my computer is no longer going to the normal home screen. It goes through the windows welcome screen and the user sign in but the home screen is black. I am able to use ctrl+alt+delete to pull up task manager but I have no idea where to go from there. I fear that I may have seriously messed up my computer. After many attempts at restarting it, the screen is still black but has a box in the top left corner that says:

I have no idea what to do and need some help.
