Computer will not boot up

My computer was getting real slow and then eventually will not boot up. It goes into the startup repair and finds no problems. It does not see any system restore points. I can get to the command prompt which I hope is good.
Would like to save a lot of the data if possible but am asking for your guidance in how to get started.
I have Windows 7.0. My command prompt says Windows [Version 6.1.7600]

As most people are, my wife is panicking.

Please advise as how to get started in checking this out.
