Windows update stopped working

I have had issues with windows update for a few weeks so I stopped the automatic updates. Now when I try and manually search for updates, I get an error message every time, error 80070422.

Ive noticed that an instance of SVCHOST uses excessive amounts of memory when I try and search for any updates.

Can anyone shed some light on what might be happening and how to fix it?
